WHAT ARE RAFFLESIA?

Rafflesia is the name of a large group of plants that all smell of rotting meat to attract flies and carrion beetles.

The plant lives like a parasite on vines, but flowers only a few days at a time.

These fly them swarms to the stench and pollinate the flower in its short lifespan.

Other plants in the genus can grow taller and one, Rafflesia Arnoldii, inspired the Pokemon character Vileplume.

Ade Putra of the Indonesia Conservation Board said: ‘The diameter is quite large for these species.

“In 2017 we came across the same flower with a diameter of 107 cm.”

According to Ade, last month’s diameter, based on scientific data and documentation, is the largest for 31 varieties of Rafflesia flowers in the world.
