The Kid Laroi’s mother Sloane Howard is linked to $10,000 credit card crime spree

The mother of teen rap sensation The Kid Laroi has been linked to a credit card crime in inner-city Sydney totaling nearly $10,000.

Sloane Howard, whose son’s real name is Charlton Howard, was charged four years ago with fraudulently using a credit card to pay for cosmetic services at a laser clinic.

Details of the same credit card holder were also used by a man who once lived near the Howards to pay $9,299.43 in lodging, clothing from online store The Iconic, and plumbing fixtures.

The Kid Laroi spent part of his childhood in social housing, from where his mother began to lead his music career to international fame.

Mother and son triumphantly returned to Australia in late May for the local leg of a world tour, which was interrupted by Howard having to turn himself in to the police over an old fraud charge.

Police allege Howard used a John Keith’s credit card details to pay for cosmetic services worth $849 from Laser Clinics Australia at the Marrickville Metro Shopping Center on August 8, 2018.

Around that time, Sloane lived with her then 14-year-old son in the inner city of Drysdale in Pitt Street, Waterloo.

The 51-year-old, who has pleaded not guilty to one count of unfairly obtaining a financial advantage through fraud, was charged in Downing Center court on Monday.

On that day, the court heard that in May at the Downing Center an offender charged with “the same factual matrix” had been convicted.

That perpetrator is Christopher Brett Kearney, 62, who was living in the Joseph Banks public housing building in George Street, Waterloo, at the time of his arrest in September 2019.

Kearney was charged by the Inner West Proactive Crime Team with unfairly obtaining a financial advantage through fraud and pleaded not guilty to any crime.

Sloane was charged in September 2020 by the same officer of the same team.

Kearney was charged with using John Keith’s credit card information to purchase clothing worth $685.79 from online store The Iconic between July 26 and August 10, 2018.

He was also accused of using that data to purchase a $1,298 Apple iPhone 8 from Officeworks and floral arrangements worth $393 between the same dates.

During the same period, Kearney used the card data to purchase plumbing tools for $7,986.14 from Tradelink in Alexandria.

Four nights’ accommodation worth $627.50 was earned with the card when Kearney stayed at The Collectionist hotel in Camperdown from July 27 to 31, 2018.

A statement from a sales assistant at The Flower Room was submitted during a hearing in Downing Center local court in May.

The assistant said that on the afternoon of August 4, 2018, she took a phone order from a woman who called herself Simone.

The caller had a pink oriental ($40), a zanzibar ($55), two hanging succulents ($70), a white mini phaly orchid ($66), a pink mini phaly ($66), a purple hyacinth ($46) and two white tulips ($60).

The assistant said the flowers were collected around 5 p.m. by a man and a child on behalf of ‘Simone’.

Kearney was found not guilty of fraudulently using the credit card to purchase the flowers and iPhone, but was convicted of the other three offenses and sentenced to 18 months’ correction by the community.

Daily Mail Australia is not suggesting that Howard was in any way involved in Kearney’s crimes, just that she is accused of using the same man’s credit card information.

Howard went to the Day Street Police Department in the city on May 26 after returning to Australia from Los Angeles, where she has lived with her son for about three years.

The pending arrest warrant was executed and she first appeared in court on May 30, when The Kid Laroi played the third of his nine scheduled Australian concerts.

Howard’s case was mentioned again in local Downing Center court on Monday when attorney Chris Watson asked for a reprieve so that the remainder of a police briefing could be served.

Mr Watson said Howard was abroad as part of an existing contractual agreement and could not be sure of her exact whereabouts.

“That’s not her choice – it’s a contractual commitment,” Mr Watson told the court.

“This is a pre-existing world tour by her son. My client is traveling abroad and her movements at this stage are unknown to me.’

Mr Watson described Howard’s son, who performs in Europe, as ‘a well-known personality’. The case was adjourned to July 11.

Taking its name from his native Kamilaroi ancestry, The Kid Laroi owes much of its success to Howard, whose taste in music shaped her son’s and who manages his affairs closely.

On Mother’s Day in 2020, he paid tribute to her as “the strongest woman I know.”

‘I’ve seen you literally risk your own life to make sure I always had the best, even the worst’ [times],’ he said.

The Kid Laroi has previously described how his mother supported him and his younger brother Austin after her 2007 divorce from her husband, music producer Nick Howard.

After his parents split, Howard took her sons to Broken Hill in far western New South Wales, where she set up a talent agency before returning to Sydney around 2017.

The Kid Laroi has spoken extensively about his time in public housing and how his family was evicted from a block of units.

Since the Aria winner broke through to a global superstar in 2020, his mother and Austin have lived with him in Los Angeles.

The now 18-year-old has recorded duets with Miley Cyrus and Justin Bieber and recently signed with Bieber’s manager Scooter Braun.

He has a record deal with Columbia and has taunted people he claims have tried to “leach” his newfound fame and fortune.
