NBA betting partners will not offer “under” or prop bets to players who earn the lowest salaries or work on a two-way or 10-day contract. This deal includes major sportsbooks including FanDuel, DraftKings and BetMGM, according to El Atlético.

“We are pleased that these actions have been taken to help protect the integrity of our games,” the NBA said in a statement issued Friday.

Call it “The Jontay Porter Rule,” although the NBA probably won’t refer to it that way. Porter, 24, received a lifetime ban at the end of last season for violating the league’s betting policy.

“A league investigation found that Porter violated league rules by disclosing confidential information to sports bettors, limiting his own participation in one or more games for betting purposes, and betting on NBA games.” the league said in a statement released on April 17.

Porter, who plays for the Toronto Raptors and their G League affiliate on a two-way contract that paid him approximately $50,000, is the type of lower-paid player who could be attracted to participating in a game plan in which he would affect deliberately the outcome of bets placed on him.

The NBA discovered in an investigation that Porter was involved in multiple betting irregularities over several months.

“The first game took place on January 26, when the Raptors faced the Los Angeles Clippers. Porter played only four minutes in that game and then left due to an eye injury he suffered days earlier. Porter finished with no points, three rebounds, one assist and he didn’t attempt a three-pointer, allowing the under to hit in all four categories. The under on Porter’s three-pointers was the biggest money-winner for bettors in all NBA props that day across. from DraftKings Sportsbook. according to ESPN“.

Additionally, the league found in its investigation that Porter gave confidential information about his health to “an individual known to be an NBA gambler” before Toronto’s March 20 game against the Sacramento Kings.

Someone else associated with Porter bet that the player would underperform in the game as part of an $80,000 accumulator bet with an online sports book. Porter made sure he would not play well and left the game saying he was sick after playing only three minutes.

The NBA also found that Porter placed at least 13 bets on games with someone else’s gaming account from January to March 2024. Although Porter did not bet on any games he played in, he bet on the Raptors to lose in a parlay bet. . Bets ranged from $15 to $22,000, for a total of $54,094. Porter made nearly $22,000 from gambling, according to the NBA.
