HBO Max The Janes was among the top winners at the 44th annual News and Documentary Emmy Awards on Wednesday, with the film – centered on a pre-Roe v. Wade abortion network in Chicago – which takes home both Best Documentary and Best Social Issues Documentary.
The National Academy of Television Arts & Sciences (NATAS) presented the winners of the Documentary category in a live ceremony at Palladium Times Square in New York City and streamed live on the NATAS viewing platform powered by Vimeo, the second of a two-day celebration. The winners of the News category were announced on Wednesday during a ceremony at the Palladium.
Scheduled presenters at Thursday night’s Docs ceremony included Nancy Abraham and Lisa Heller of HBO Documentary & Family Programming, reporter Jelani Cobb, Nothing compares director Kathryn Ferguson, NPR host and Is that black enough for you?!? writer-director Elvis Mitchell, DOC NYC co-founder Thom Powers and National Geographic correspondent Mariana van Zeller. Two-time Oscar winner Barbara Kopple (Harlan County, USA, American dream) was the previously announced recipient of the Lifetime Achievement award at the event.
In addition to winning best documentary for The Janes, HBO Max led the night’s wins with a total of six. On both nights, CNN Worldwide set a network record with 11 wins, including Emmys for its coverage of the Russian invasion of Ukraine and the Uvalde school shooting, plus the Outstanding Emerging Journalist award (Selina Wang).
