Tesco has launched a limited-edition sandwich inspired by a beloved British classic, served in cafes across the country, leaving shoppers in a whirlwind of excitement and confusion.

The supermarket has launched the limited-edition Beechwood Ham, Egg and Chips sandwich, influenced by the classic British ‘caff local’ of ham, egg and chips.

The sandwich features layers of succulent Beechwood ham, chopped egg mayonnaise and salt and vinegar potato fries, topped with ketchup and all nestled between two thick slices of white bread.

Part of Tesco’s new ‘global cuisine’ range, which includes a Buffalo Chicken and Blue Cheese Wrap and a Korean-inspired Gochujang Spicy Chicken Sub – the sarnie hit shelves earlier this week.

And fans have already been whipped into a frenzy, with happy customers leaving glowing reviews online, while a number of disheartened reviewers have banded together and shared their thoughts on one of the key ingredients.

A shopper submitted a photo of his find to a food and produce blog on Instagram as he browsed the fridge aisle at his local Tesco store.

Reposted by @newfoodsUK on March 20, the photo of the customer holding Beechwood’s ham, egg and chip sandwich has garnered more than 1,700 likes and dozens of comments from fans and critics.

After trying the sarnie, one person wrote: “I ate it, it was nice.” The chips were not soggy.

Another confirmed the sentiment, commenting: “I ate this and it’s like having chips in your sandwich, surprisingly tasty.”

However, not everyone has been won over by Tesco’s latest creation, with some critics unconvinced by the prospect of enjoying a sandwich filled with ‘cold’ and ‘soggy’ crisps.

One person asked: “Soggy, cold chips? while another asked: “Refrigerated chips?

A third disapproving individual said: “Just because you can do it doesn’t mean you should,” while another reviewer wrote: “Limited edition because no sane person is going to want to buy cold chips in a sandwich “.

Another shopper, who tried the sarnie but didn’t seem to like it, wrote: “I got one yesterday…weird!!!” And not in a good way.’

Priced at £3, the sandwich is available in all stores as part of a £3.40 Clubcard meal deal, but is currently not available to buy online for delivery or collection at residence.

Sarah Bryer, sandwich designer at Tesco, said: “We think this could become a breakfast classic.

“We know how much the chip butty is loved across the nation, and we’ve also seen a massive wave of people admitting their guilty pleasure of a crispy sandwich on social media, combined with their favorite ham, egg and chips British pubs.”

It comes after a single mother who was fired from her cleaning job for eating a leftover tuna sandwich in a law firm’s kitchen said she suffered “unfair and inhumane” treatment.

Gabriela Rodriguez, 39, was fired by contractor Total Clean after helping herself to the £1.50 Tesco sandwich from an abandoned tray for employees at city law firm Devonshires.
