King Frederick and Queen Mary of Denmark have given a rare glimpse inside their palatial home, ten years after the famous couple renovated it to their very specific tastes.

And according to Danish stylist Jacob Holst Mouritzen, the single photograph reveals much more about the couple and their lives than most might think.

At first glance, the image is quite normal and shows the newly appointed King on the sofa with David Lappartient, president of the international cycling union, who appears relaxed in the company of royalty.

But, says Holst Mouritzen, the details of photography are important and should not be overlooked.

The first, the curtains, demonstrates the “royal” or wealthy nature of the family, but could easily be overlooked by the average royal observer.

‘The curtains with the classic gadgets. If you have it, then you are from the royal or noble upper class, or want to (express it). “You can’t afford to have that unless you’re a very special person,” he told Danish publication BT.

The second characteristic demonstrates that the newly appointed royals are “modern,” something they have worked to demonstrate since taking over from the former Queen.

“This dusty pink velvet pouf is very modern and has been for a few seasons,” Mouritzen said, adding that “dusty pink” is “the perfect color.”

The other details are even more subtle but immediately caught the expert’s attention.

The first is the alarm system in the corner of the room, which has been painted to match the wall instead of just sitting “clunky and ugly” in the corner.

He said this is something very few people do and shows the Queen’s attention to detail.

He then mentioned the books, stating that they would not have been chosen by a public relations team, but rather reflected the couple’s true interests: art and horses.

The books include an art book by Luc Tuymans, who is from Belgium, and a book titled “Horses of Qatar.”

“Most Danes have no idea about horse breeding in Qatar, they only know that Qatar is a bad thing, with bad human rights and migrant workers killed during the World Cup,” he said.

It is well known that Queen Mary is passionate about equestrian sports.

Mouritzen added that if the pouf had been decorated for the occasion – and photographed – it would have had books about Denmark or Denmark.

The art book, he explained, fits better in a real house, as it has “themes about good and evil, God and history.”

Other details include the couple’s modern lamp vase, a high-end Georg Jensen plate, and an Anna von Lipa rose water jug that costs AU$163 (€95).
