The Handmaid’s Tale season 5 FIRST LOOK: Elisabeth Moss and Yvonne Strahovski in teaser images

The Handmaid’s Tale Season 5 FIRST WATCH: Elisabeth Moss and Yvonne Strahovski tease the aftermath of Fred Waterford’s shocking death

Commander Frederick R. Waterford (played by Joseph Fiennes) died in Season 4 at the hands of Elisabeth Moss’ character June Osbourne in Season 4.

And now the first images of the aftermath of that shocking event have been revealed.

Actress and castmate Yvonne Strahovski, 39, was featured in the first images Hulu released for the upcoming season 5 of The Handmaid’s Tale.

An angry close-up of June’s face was seen after she orchestrated the death of the Commander who repeatedly raped her in the new module throughout the series.

Based on Margaret Atwood’s 1985 novel, the show takes place in a patriarchal dystopia called Gilead, based on what used to be the United States.

Women are reduced to a status far below that of men, stripped of basic rights such as reading or using money.

‘Handmaids’ are the women who are forced under veils and subjected to a form of slavery where they are repeatedly raped in order to have children.

Meanwhile, the other image showed Yvonne’s character Serena – who is Commander Waterford’s wife – as she doesn’t seem too upset as she could be seen smiling behind a black mourning veil.

According to Hulu, Serena wants to “raise her profile in Toronto as Gilead’s influence penetrates Canada.”

One familiar face will be missing from the upcoming season, as Alexis Bledel shockedly announced her departure from her Emmy-winning role on the show, which had then started filming its fifth season.

“After much thought, I felt I had to part with The Handmaid’s Tale at this point,” said the 40-year-old actress, who has been on the show since season one.

“I am eternally grateful to Bruce Miller for writing such truthful and resonant scenes for Emily, and Hulu, MGM, the cast and crew for their support,” she said. Variety

Alexis played Emily Malek, who was a maidservant under the name Ofglen until she escaped to Canada and now works for the Mayday Resistance.

She won an Emmy for Outstanding Guest Actress for her work in the first season and has been nominated three more times for the show.

The show has long since outpaced the events of the Margaret Atwood novel, so the writers have a degree of latitude to shape the plot around Alexis’ exit.

The Handmaid’s Tale season 5 will premiere on Hulu on September 14.
