A bizarre new social media trend claims men think about the Roman Empire “at least” three times a week – but what unusual things are occupying women’s minds?
The sudden interest in the Roman Empire began in August, after a Sweden-based Roman reenactor, Gaius Flavius, shared an Instagram Reel that read: “Ladies, many of you don’t realize how often the men think of the Roman Empire.”
What resulted was a strange coincidence where men around the world revealed that ancient Rome crossed their minds several times a week.
According to the general public, women think the same way about their best friend from middle school, Pride and Prejudice (2005), Rory Gilmore, the Titanic, Taylor Swift and Tom Holland’s cover of Rihanna’s “Umbrella.”
As thousands gathered to define what “their” Roman Empire is, a worrying number of people brought up topics such as real crime, fear of being kidnapped or murdered, or past atrocities like witch trials.
“I can’t understand this trend from the Roman Empire – people say the female equivalent is murder,” wrote American Win.
“Whether it’s us who are murdered or someone else, we think about it a lot. What does this say about men and women? This is such a strange discovery, I’m so confused.
Another, Gabs, gave a more detailed version of why she thinks she’s targeted every day.
“My ‘Roman Empire’ walks into a gas station and makes no eye contact with anyone. He looks over my shoulder and wonders if I’m being followed or just paranoid.
“It’s about wondering if I’m fast enough to get away from a dangerous situation, or strong enough to fight it. I think about it every day – when I’m at the supermarket, at the gas station, while walking.
On a lighter note, Kat shared that many women fantasize about their future “all the time.”
“Women think about decorating our future homes, planning our wedding, looking at everyday objects and wondering what they would look like in our living rooms,” she said.
