The Future Of trailer: The Verge’s first Netflix show about the future of everything

It took almost three years of work, but The edge‘s first Netflix show — the future of — finally arrives on June 21, with a second set of episodes on June 28.

the future of is an ambitious look at how everything around us could change over time, as narrated by Jurnee Smollett. And it’s really a show about everything: Our episodes focus on topics from cheeseburgers and dogs to skyscrapers and the afterlife. We did our best to imagine how these things could change in our lives, the near future, and then the wildest distant future imaginable. And we did it by talking to the people who are working on these ideas right now – and some roadside reporters along the way. Think of it as a documentary for the future.

We wanted the predictions in the future of be exciting. We wanted them to be a little weird. We even wanted some of them to be a little scary. (One of my rules for the show was that we shouldn’t just predict a global surveillance network, a concept that a lot seems to depend on other ideas.) But the point is to remember that none of this is guaranteed.

One of the main ideas we have at The edge is that science and technology are not just things that to happen† People work hard to invent things, people use those inventions in surprising ways, and a new world comes into view all the time as that cycle repeats itself endlessly. So, more than anything, we wanted to create a show that made people feel like an exciting and hopeful future is possible – if We are excited.

We had some incredible partners in making this show: Rose Eveleth and her team at Flash Forward came on board as story producers, helping us build a vision of the future that is simultaneously grounded in reality and deeply fantastic, and Josh Barry and his team at 21 Laps Entertainment (the production company behind a small show called Weird stuff) has helped us to make those fantastic visions of the future exciting and accessible to everyone. And of course, the teams from Vox Media Studios and The Verge who worked on the show made sure it was great at every turn.

the future of will premiere on Netflix in two six-episode batches. The first six, on June 21, will be approximately The future of:

  • Cheeseburgers

And the second set, on June 28, will be about The future of:

the future of is one of the most exciting projects we’ve ever undertaken at The edge† We can’t wait for you all to see it.
