Funniest Fringe gag? You must be kidding… Nerdy joke about zookeeper voted best of Edinburgh Festival 2023
The Edinburgh Fringe found themselves at the center of a ‘woke’ row today on the one-liner voted the best joke of the festival.
The award-winning gag comedian Lorna Rose Treen says, “I started dating a zookeeper, but it turned out to be a cheetah.”
Taken from his Skin Pigeon show currently at the Edinburgh Festival, the pun saw Treen land the top spot in Dave’s highly anticipated Funniest Joke of the Fringe award.
The prestigious honor was bestowed on the London-based comic after a panel of UK comedy critics selected a shortlist of jokes from this year’s Fringe shows – then anonymously put them to a vote audience of 2,000 people.

Taken from his Skin Pigeon show currently at the Edinburgh Festival, the pun saw Treen land the top spot in Dave’s highly anticipated Funniest Joke of the Fringe award.
Speaking about the success of his ‘stupid’ zookeeper joke, Treen said: ‘I’m thrilled to have won Dave’s Best Joke! Are you kidding! I can’t wait to tell my mom!
“It’s already such a wonderful joy to be making his Edinburgh Fringe debut this year, and it’s a beautiful thing on top of that.” Many thanks for rewarding my stupid prank with this title!’
Hot on the heels of Treen in second place was Liz Guterbock’s sweet mockery of the overly apologetic Brits: ‘The most British thing I’ve ever heard? A lady who said “Well, I’m sorry, but I’m not apologizing”.
And in third place was Amos Gill’s topical joke about the economy: “Last year I made a great joke about inflation. But it’s not worth it now.

The prestigious honor was bestowed on the London-based comic after a panel of UK comedy critics selected a shortlist of jokes from this year’s Fringe shows – then anonymously put them to a vote audience of 2,000 people.

Sneaking into ninth place was William Stone’s pithy phrase: “Nationwide must have looked pretty silly when they opened their first branch.”
But beating them all was actor and writer Treen’s cheetah joke, told on his first “absurd breakout character show” Skin Pigeon which received rave reviews and sold out at least 28 shows during the Fringe.
Skin Pigeon is until Sunday August 27 at The Attic in Pleasance Courtyard.
