A former prison governor has talked about tricking violent prisoners to prevent them from identifying a sex offender.
The former governor of Grafton prison John Heffernan spent thirty years in the correctional industry.
He spoke with Daily Mail Australia about an incident that occurred while he was the governor of a minimal security prison, where they had just transferred a new inmate.

"A delegation of about six inmates approached me in the main center, alleging that an inmate who had just been transferred to the center was a child molester," he told Daily Mail Australia.
Then they demanded that they be shown the list of offenses of the inmates.
After being caught in the place and with six inmates flanking him, Mr. Heffernan caught them off guard with what he did next.
"I took them by surprise when I accepted their demand," he said.
"I told them that I was going to look for the file of the prisoners' guarantees and I would show them exactly what offenses the time was fulfilling."
Mr. Heffernan said after his surprise that the inmates seemed very happy with their decision until he realized what he was going to do.
"Until I told them that I was also going to get their authorization files and show everyone at the center what offenses they had committed," he said.
"I told them that was fair: if they wanted to see their offenses, others had the right to see their files." He was bluffing, of course, but they did not know, they left with a shake of their heads.

Mr. Heffernan then went to his office to review the list of offenses and decided that he had to act after reading the list of offenses.
Then I arranged the transfer of the prisoner in question as soon as possible. They were right, he was a pedophile, "Heffernan said.
Mr. Heffernan said a tacit hierarchy of offenses within the prison system.
Assassins, armed robbers and others are at the top of the hierarchy and criminals related to children are at the bottom, "he said.
"The overwhelming majority of child murderers will pass their sentence under protection."
