At only 38 years old, Emma Lewisham directs one of the most beloved skin care companies in the world: an impressive feat in a saturated market and even more so for a brand that launched in 2019.
And now, the New Zealand mogul has revealed some of her top skincare secrets and told the story of how her eponymous brand went from unknown to sold-out celebrity, seemingly overnight.
‘(Before founding Emma Lewisham) I was working as a senior executive at a global technology company and the seed was planted when my doctor warned me against using certain skincare ingredients,” Emma told FEMAIL.
“Having recently lost my mother to cancer and hoping to get pregnant, my health was on my mind…it wasn’t until this conversation that I thought this would include skincare.”

And now, the New Zealand mogul has revealed some of her top skincare secrets and the story of how her eponymous brand went from unknown to full-blown celebrity, seemingly overnight.
Emma started looking for formulas that were natural so she wouldn’t have to make compromises. She was used to using high-performance luxury products and she quickly discovered that evidence-based natural skin care didn’t exist.
So after discovering the work of Nobel Prize winner Frances H. Arnold, who recognized nature as “the best bioengineering in history,” she decided to discover nature’s effectiveness in skin care.
‘I believe our success is due to a symphony of factors. Emma Lewisham “entered the market at a crucial time for the beauty industry, as during Covid people were starting to think about their health and how they lived,” Emma said.
‘The market was perfect for the change we wanted to offer. We were also offering something new, we weren’t just another brand, we had (and continue to) break new ground in the science of skincare and unlocked the power of nature.’
They’ve also made world-first patented discoveries, such as their live human skin strain probiotic in Supernatural Blemish Serum…
Lara Worthington endorses the brand and has long been the face of the company.

“I really love all of our products for different reasons, however, the product that has a very special place in my heart is the Skin Reset Serum,” Emma confessed.
“It was our founding product that I developed in direct response to not being able to find a science-backed natural brightening product, and it has since been independently proven to outperform some of the most recognized products on the market.”

THE ‘FOUNDER’S REGIME’
Emma changes her routines with the seasons and is always sure to listen to what her skin needs. She currently follows a strict morning and evening routine for the New Zealand autumn.
Tomorrow
‘In the morning, I start by cleansing with our Illuminating Oil Cleanser. “Never underestimate the importance of cleansing in the morning, it is very important to remove excess oil and dead skin cells that have fallen off the skin overnight,” Emma said.
‘Having a clean base really helps your other products work better. I use an organic cotton muslin cloth to remove the cleanser, which acts as a gentle exfoliant every day. Then I apply our latest formulation innovation (which officially launches April 30).
‘Then I apply my Skin Reset Eye Crème followed by my Skin Reset Serum. Regardless of the season, I always finish my morning routine by applying our Skin Shield SPF30.’

Evening
“For my nighttime routine, I start with the Illuminating Oil Cleanser followed by our Illuminating Exfoliant three nights a week, which I like to leave on for 15 to 20 minutes to let the AHAs and BHAs work,” Emma said.
‘I then apply our new formulation, followed by my Skin Reset Eye Crème and our advanced Supernatural Face Crème Riche. Then I finish with our Supernatural Facial Oil. If I feel like my skin needs a little more TLC, I’ll use our Supernatural Sleeping Mask.’
Make up
Emma’s top five makeup products include: ILIA True Skin Serum Foundation, Westman Atelier Vital Skin Foundation & Concealer Stick, ILIA ‘NightLite Bronzing Powder’, Westman Atelier ‘Eye Want You’ Mascara and ILIA ‘Balmy Tint Hydrating Lip Balm’.
“You’ll never find me boarding any flight without my Supernatural Sleep Mask in my carry-on,” Emma said.
Travel
Emma’s travel skincare secret is the Supernatural Sleeping Mask.
“Flying is incredibly dehydrating on the skin with such prolonged time in intensive air conditioning (especially when flying long distance),” he said.
‘So when it comes to skincare, it’s all about keeping it as nourished and hydrated as possible. You’ll never find me boarding any flight without my Supernatural Sleep Mask in my carry-on.
EMMA’S DIET RULES FOR GLOWING SKIN
“I really prioritize nourishing my body with a wide variety of fresh fruits and vegetables,” Emma said.
‘I avoid gluten and refined sugar, drink plenty of water, and believe that holistic wellness practices like exercise, meditation, and other stress-relieving tools have a huge impact on our overall health and well-being.
“Radiant skin is a nice bonus that comes as a result of a healthy lifestyle.”

FAUX PAS SKIN CARE
Emma says the biggest mistake when it comes to healthier skin is not using sunscreen daily.
“UV rays are one of the biggest, if not the biggest, factors contributing to premature skin aging,” he said.
“In addition to applying SPF every day (even in winter), I wish more people saw that true beauty is an inside job.”
THE ‘EMMA EFFECT’
Emma says the success of the business is threefold.
‘Firstly, we formulate skincare fundamentally differently, taking an approach that prioritizes skin physiology, rather than an ingredient-based approach. Developed by physiologists for the complex physiology of the skin, our patented Physiology Synchrony Unlock (PSU) Method reflects the way the skin works,’ said Emma.
‘Secondly, there are the unparalleled independent scientific-grade tests, which validate the performance behind each of our products. Our natural formulations are at the forefront of scientific innovation and we are truly breaking new ground and bringing new discoveries to market, such as a live skin strain probiotic.
‘Thirdly, we are truly a thoughtful, innovative and passionate brand that is leading the way in the skincare industry’s transition to a more sustainable one. As a registered B Corporation and the world’s first 100% circular and climate-positive skincare brand, we are proving that operating sustainably and taking responsibility for everything we produce is not only possible but thriving. “Our sustainability achievements earned us the personal endorsement of Dr. Jane Goodall.”
