A driver of a crane that was arrested in his pajamas protected his face in court after being accused of raping a dozen people in three decades.

According to reports, Gregory John Richardson raped 14-year-old girls between 1989 and 2007, and is suspected of 20 incidents.

The 51-year-old man appeared before the Burwood local court on Friday, doing his best to hide his face while asking the magistrate to stop the media from publishing his name.

However, it was his lawyer Dean Bainbridge who made the most of the conversation.

"He certainly understands the nature of the accusations that are presented to him, but he is entitled to the presumption of innocence and that is the point at which we are going to take the case," Bainbridge said. Nine news reporters on Friday morning.

Richardson was arrested Thursday morning and taken away from a house in Epping, northwest Sydney, after tests allegedly revealed "forensic links" between four cases of sexual assault.

Police in New South Wales claim that the man sexually assaulted 12 victims between 14 and 40 years of age.

About 20 kilometers northwest of the city, two attacks allegedly occurred in Beecroft in 1989 and four in Cheltenham between 1994 and 2004.

Another assault allegedly occurred in Hornsby in 2007, while three other incidents allegedly took place near Wahroonga, Epping and Macquarie Park from 2004 to 2007, 9News reported.

The alleged perpetrator did not know the victims who were the target of "predatory attacks".

The squad of child abuse and sex crimes detectives established Strikeforce Petit in June to re-investigate historical assaults.

Police said that once the news of Richardson's arrest broke down in the media, they were inundated with phone calls and more information.

Officials are re-examining a series of other sexual assaults in the area that date back to the 1980s, and suspect that there could be even more alleged victims.

Detective Superintendent John Kerlate said the alleged victims had left the attacks behind, but that the arrest had "revived some of those initial feelings."

"It was a mixture of emotions, some of them very relieved, some were grateful for the progress and unfortunately some of them very emotional," he said.

A neighbor told 9News that Richardson's arrest was "shocking", while another person said they often helped "feed his dog" and had a "house key" when he was out of town.

According to reports, the 51-year-old man lived in the house with his mother, but she died since then.

The breakthrough came after a review of four cold cases that were previously linked by the trend and the modus operandi, police said.

After the man was arrested, the police executed search warrants on two properties close to Ryde and Berrilee.

The Strike Force Petit detectives were accompanied by heavily armed officers from the Operations Support Group of the Northwest Metropolitan Region.

The driver of the crane was escorted up the stairs of his house handcuffed while wearing his pajamas, and taken to the Ryde police station.

The Squadron of Child Abuse and Sexual Offenses is composed of detectives who are specially trained to investigate cases against children and adults, including sexual assault, serious physical abuse and extreme cases of negligence.

The registration orders are still in progress and the consultations continue.

Although initially denied bail to Richardson, it was indicated that he would request the release when he reappears in court in late August.
