The CDC inspectors look at eight main areas of a cruise ship: medical facilities, drinking water systems, swimming pools and hot tubs, galleys and dining rooms, children's activity centers, hotel accommodation, ventilation systems and common areas.
Ships are scored on a 100-point scale with points deducted for cleanliness violations. A score of 85 or lower is a failed score.
The ship with the lowest score based on current inspections is the Pacific Venus of Japan Cruise Lines, which scored only 76.
At the final inspection, CDC workers found that drinking water was not kept at the right halogen levels and that there was a lack of filters in the whirlpool spas.
