The period drama only aired its final episodes in December, bringing the infamous show about the British royal family to a close.

But the success of Scoop could mean that there will be new installments of The Crown, but in an abbreviated format, as a limited series or movie.

A TV insider told The Sun: “The consensus was that the real drama seemed to diminish the closer it got to the present day and multiple stories that many were familiar with were retold.”

‘But Scoop showed that, rather than doing this in an endless ten-part series, focusing on one moment in time seemed to hook people.

“If they can repeat that pattern by offering prequels in a shorter form, they believe they may have found a winning formula for a new incarnation of The Crown.”

Nicknamed Bertie, he reigned from the death of his mother in 1901 until his own death in 1910, at the age of 68, due to health problems caused by his excessive smoking.

Edward was caught in many scandals throughout his life, and had a reputation as a womanizer that led to him being referred to as a “playboy prince” and “Dirty Bertie.”

He was also a frequent gambler and once had to testify in court in 1890, after participating in a card game in which a guest was accused of cheating.

Edward’s only surviving son, George V, appeared in the fifth series of The Crown, played by Richard Dillane when the show explored the Russian Revolution in 1917.

While his grandsons Edward VIII (Alex Jennings) and George VI (Jared Harris) appeared in the early seasons, Edward’s abdication leading to George’s reign was depicted, before Queen Elizabeth II took the throne.
