Laura Lomas, a sister in ward 36, said that Mr. England would get up every morning and get dressed before the therapy teams arrived so he could make sure he could pass his wife while he was exercising.

Meanwhile, Ms. England asked how her husband was and when he got to her bed they sat down and had a cup of tea.

Hospital staff also made sure the couple ate their meals together.

After being released from hospital, Mr. England said, “I want to get better so that I can take care of my wife – first of all I want to be there for Gillian.

“I didn’t miss anything at the hospital because Gillian is here and I saw her every day.

“Getting fired together, the same day is even more special because we’ve been on a recovery together.”

One of the couple’s sons, Russell, said his father Michael had a “particularly tough old time with the virus.”

At one point, Michael had only had 48 hours to live and contacted his three sons to say goodbye, but he recovered incredibly.

Mr England would like to thank the hospital health workers who have worked hard to ensure that the couple living in Leicester can be treated in the same ward.

He added, “Kindness goes so far.”

One of the three sons of Mr and Mrs England arrived on Friday to pick up the couple and offered gifts to the servants who had looked after them.

The inspiring couple continues to recover at home.
