Living in Britain, if there is one item of clothing in your wardrobe that you should wear regularly it is your winter coat.

I would say it is the most important fashion decision you will make and the best item to invest in.

A coat is vital to creating a good first impression (ask anyone in politics or royalty). It can also cover a multitude of sins: with the perfect coat, you can wear jeans and a sweater every day and still look chic.

Well-made coats are designed to last and not be as influenced by trends. And this is the perfect time to buy a new one, when luxury brands have their winter collections on sale.

My best advice? Always inspect zippers and linings.

Here’s my guide to the five best styles to look for and how to avoid fashion mistakes…

The elegant smoker

The padding returns season after season, but check the quality of the stitching.

Celebrities like Katie Holmes love American brand Marfa Stance’s reversible puffer coats. Look for something collarless and with large pockets.

Reiss has a black, khaki or reversible caramel version for £138 (was £348, reiss.com). Just avoid a furry hood as it is a thing of the past.

The classic wrap

In the Netflix series Black Doves, Keira Knightley looks effortlessly chic in a caramel wool double-breasted coat.

In her daring new film Babygirl, Nicole Kidman’s character opts for an elegant camel version. It’s no surprise to see them in similar styles: with its flowing lines and cinched waist, it’s a classic.

Max Mara’s version will set you back £1,970, but I recommend heading to Bicester Village, where you can currently find the same cashmere and wool blend for £519.

However, impeccable tailoring doesn’t have to cost a fortune – if you’re looking for a bargain, try Hobbs’ version for £199 (right, reduced from £299, hobbs.com).

A striking color

The Princess of Wales knows the power of statement outerwear and has been proudly sporting her vibrant red Alexander McQueen coat for years.

Choose a color you like and wear it frequently; Your outfit underneath should be a mix of similar shades for a look that reflects considered elegance.

Keep the cut simple and make it ankle length, which is flattering and will make you look tall.

Try Nobody’s Child’s scarlet style for a bold statement for £130 (was £229, nobodyschild.com).

Crossed

Whether you choose to button up or not, a double-breasted coat will always look stylish. As in men’s fashion, the double row of buttons is considered more formal, so it adds instant shine to any look.

If you want your coat to go with everything, navy blue is the color to choose, as it is more pleasant for tired skin than black. This £34 version of Anyday from John Lewis (was £69, juanlewis.com) is incredibly wearable.

Sumptuous plush texture

Created by Italian brand Max Mara in the 1980s, the teddy bear coat has been a hit for the past ten years – a perfect combination of comfort and style.

Actress Lily Collins prefers Max Mara’s oversized caramel style, which will set you back £2,760. French label Tara Jarmon’s version feels just like Emily In Paris, and is now a fraction of the price, reduced from £515 to £216 (tarajarmon.es).

Never go astray with complicated cuts in this fabric – something simple and looser will always look flattering.

This style has the advantage of not being too formal for a drink in a pub, but elegant enough to wear to the theater.
