Chase Australia star Anne ‘The Governess’ Hegerty spoke on Monday about how her difficult childhood helped her become the legendary test master she is.

The television personality, 65, revealed that she is loving her current life as a famous pageant teacher, after overcoming a very challenging childhood.

‘I didn’t really have a particularly good childhood. The music was better, but, to be honest, there wasn’t much else that was better when I was growing up,” she said. 7news.

“There are so many people my age who remember past times with nostalgia. And I look at them and think, “No, you think it was better because your joints didn’t hurt.”

The London-born star admitted she had a difficult relationship with her parents growing up, which made her determined to prove herself.

‘I grew up feeling like I couldn’t really do anything. My mother never told me that she could achieve anything. My father was completely incompetent in all areas of life.

Hegerty added that after she was diagnosed with autism in 2003, she turned her life around when she realized her memorization skills were second to none and gained fame as a test teacher.

‘I always felt like I had a brain like a Rolodex. If I know, then she is there. There’s one thing I can do and it turns out people like to see me do it. “That gives you a little more confidence.”

Hegerty is one of The Chasers’ test masters that contestants are pitted against on the Channel Seven game show, along with several others including Brydon ‘The Shark’ Coverdale and Issa ‘The Supernerd’ Schultz.

The show has been hosted by Larry Emdur since 2021, after former host Andrew O’Keefe’s contract was not renewed.

Emdur’s first episode of The Chase aired in July 2021, during Seven’s coverage of the Olympic Games.
