A British ex-schoolboy cricket player has accidentally become one of the biggest celebrities in Malaysia after he learned the wrong language during a backpacking trip to Asia.

Dan Tyler, known by his hordes of Malaysian fans as Mat Dan, began his life in Cheltenham, Gloucestershire.

But now at the age of 29 he lives 6,000 miles away in Kuala Lumpur, where he is organizing his own prime time travel show and is about to release a new clothing line.

As a young boy, Dan was an avid cricketer, but sport had taken a back seat in his life when he discovered music and parties because of his teenage years.

He decided to stop studying to work in a clothing store.

As a 19-year-old, he had saved enough money to go backpacking in Southeast Asia with his friends and loved the culture so much that he decided to return a few months later.

He decided to settle on the small island of Pulau Kapas on the east coast of Malaysia, where he immersed himself with the locals.

Over time, he began to pick up their language which he thought was Malay, the official language of the country.

However, when he made a trip to the Malaysian capital Kuala Lumpur, other people struggled to understand him.

He eventually discovered that he had actually learned a local dialect called Terengganu.

He returned to the island and rumors began to spread about the Englishman who could speak in one of the more obscure dialects.

In 2012, a video of him who spoke in Terengganese was posted on YouTube and he went viral.

As a result, he was approached by TV crews who were wondering if he wanted to go in front of the camera and later offered his own prime-time travel series called Haramain Backpackers – Trans Siberian.

After the program was broadcast, Dan immediately became a success from one day to the next and has since then had more than 838,000 followers on Instagram and was recognized throughout Malaysia.

Dan soon branched to other media and found himself as a permanent feature in Asian radio chat programs, including on Manis FM.
