The best and worst transfer unveilings after City shared throwback photos of Erling Haaland

Manchester City completed the signing of Borussia Dortmund superstar Erling Haaland and announced his arrival at the club by recreating a photo from his childhood.

The original photo of Haaland shows him wearing the 2008-2009 Manchester City shirt as he sits on a black, gray sofa with a pillow on either side.

Haaland’s father had left the club five years before that photo was taken and things had changed at City. Sven-Goran Eriksson was in charge of the Citizens and Richard Dunne was the captain.

Therefore, when the Citizens announced the signing of Haaland for £51 million earlier this week, they referred to the old photo.

The 21-year-old recreated the famous shot from his youth by wearing the club’s 2022-2023 kit while sitting on a similar bench.

So with that in mind, sports post have looked at the best and worst transfer reveals over the years…

Andre Moreira to Aston Villa

Aston Villa jumped on the Love Island hype to announce the signing of Andre Moreira in 2018.

The Premier League giants have released a video featuring a clip of a Love Island contestant receiving a text message.

However, it was no ordinary text. The message that appeared on the screen announced that Moreira had joined the ‘Villa’.

They then added the hashtag “#HesAKeeper” to refer to the facts he hoped to put between the sticks for Steve Bruce’s side.

A clever pun, but really?

Alexis Sanchez to Manchester United

In hindsight is a wonderful thing and no one will know that better than Manchester United after this transfer announcement.

United’s announcement video for Alexis Sanchez is nothing short of appalling, considering how badly he flopped at Old Trafford.

The clip shows him playing ‘Glory Glory Man United’ at the piano and standing proudly in the middle of their iconic stadium.

It’s safe to say that his rendition of the song was the best performance he’s put in all season – failing to impress the fans or Jose Mourinho with his abilities on the pitch.

Jesus Navas back to Seville

Sevilla marked the return of club legend Jesus Navas in one of the most bizarre ways. The Spanish giants staged a kidnapping to reveal that their star player had returned.

Yes, you read that right.

The video started when it was watched on the streets of Seville before two men put a black bag over his head and put him in the back of a trunk.

The Spaniard was then driven to the Ramon Sanchez Pizjuan stadium and taken to the stands before being released.

Ricardo Quaresma to Vitoria de Guimaraes

Ricardo Quaresma’s announcement on Vitoria de Guimaraes is probably one of the most bizarre clips we’ve ever seen.

It was recorded in a medieval castle and was seen hand and foot waiting by a butler. He was also offered a Mustang car before emerging on a white horse.

The video was intended to mark his return to his native Portugal to the Primeira Liga, after spending five years in Turkey with Besiktas and Kasimpasa respectively.

Max Meyer to Crystal Palace

What is it with top clubs and using puns to announce their new signings?

Crystal Palace decided to announce Max Meyer’s arrival at Selhurst Park by calling him the ‘Meyer of London’.

Palace signed the German midfielder on a free transfer in 2018 after his contract expired at second place in the Bundesliga, Schalke.

He was the club’s third signing this summer, but arguably their most shocking announcement.

Arthur Melo to Barcelona

Barcelona decided to create a new character for their Arthur Melo reveal. They designed a talking football that stood in the Camp Nou and talked about the history of the club.

Though it was intriguing, it was bizarre how most of the clip consisted of the ball talking about the current players rather than Melo.

The video spoke highly of Messi, Coutinho, Busquets, Pique, Rakitic and Dembele before briefly mentioning Melo at the end.

It was a missed opportunity for Barcelona because they failed to mention Melo’s skills and ability, despite the video being made to show off him.

Stuart Taylor new deal at Southampton

It’s not to everyone’s taste, but I can appreciate this one. Southampton mocked the trend of dramatic new signing announcements by releasing a theatrical trailer for reserve goalkeeper Stuart Taylor’s one-year contract extension.

The trailer opens with the message, ‘Here it is…another unnecessarily lengthy football club signing video’, while covering clips of helicopters and boats approaching Southampton’s St Mary’s ground, accompanied by a thumping drum beat.

Negative movie reviews then flash onto the screen, dismissing the plot for being “unnecessarily too complicated” and demanding the club “just announce the goddamn signing.”

Armed officials watch as they prepare to barge into an unknown location, and a series of close-ups of an unidentified man build the tension.

Making fun of Salah’s announcement, a series of tweets urging Saints to “announce Taylor” spin onscreen as the trailer draws to a close… before ending in an anticlimactic shot of Taylor relaxing in his garden.

And finally, Taylor turns to the camera and raises his cup of tea, before a message appears on the screen confirming his new one-year deal – the video is accompanied by the cheeky caption ‘Are we doing this right?’

Oscar Gobern to Yeovil Town

Yeovil Town took to popular dating app Tinder to reveal Oscar Gobern’s signing to a free transfer in 2017.

A short video on the club’s Twitter account showed them swiping left – indicating that they didn’t like Lionel Messi, Neymar, Ronaldo and even former Swansea striker Lee Trundle, before settling on Gobern.

Shortly after Yeovil made the first move, Gobern returned the compliment and club and player were evenly matched.

Lorenzo Pellegrini to Rome

Football fans love FIFA – the video game isn’t the governing body, of course. And football fans love a new acquisition.

So Roma decided to combine into two when they announced the arrival of Lorenzo Pellegrini’s return to the club.

Pellegrini was mocked as a Roma player in FIFA17 and played as himself during the music video.

The Italian attacking midfielder scored a sensational goal from the edge of the penalty area.

John Terry to Aston Villa

John Terry was introduced as an Aston Villa player through a convoluted and somewhat bizarre series of animated WhatsApp messages.

The Aston Villa group included manager Steve Bruce, owner Dr Tony Xia, Gabby Agbonlahor, Olof Mellberg and Paul McGrath, Jack Grealish and more.

The coaching staff was seen discussing JT’s possible arrival before he was added to the group chat.

Agbonlahor went on to call Terry the best defender the club had ever had. This caused people like McGrath and Mellberg to leave the chat.

The music video ended with Terry suggesting that he take the number 26 shirt off Jonathan Kodjia – which turned out to be no joke.

Jake Gray to Yeovil Town

Yeovil Town took advantage of a new Snapchat feature in 2017 to announce the arrival of former Palace Academy star Jake Gray.

The club – known for their hilarious player announcements – broke the news that they had signed Gray with SnapMaps.

The midfielder was featured in the center of the field at Huish Park on the social media app.

Sead Kolasinac to Arsenal

Arsenal chose to reveal Sead Kolasinac using a crossword quiz.

The names of nine former Gunners, signed by Arsene Wenger, were listed, with the first letters of each of their names spelling “Kolasinac.”

The first Arsenal fan to pass this IQ test was greeted with a four-second homemade video of the Bosnian defender.

Georges-Kevin N’Koudou to Tottenham

Tottenham opted for a somewhat melodramatic montage when announcing Georges-Kevin N’Koudou.

They mixed blockbuster orchestral music with videos of N’Koudou doing stepovers in his training kit.

The video then saw thousands of headlines about the Frenchman’s transfer fly across the scene.

Before closing with the hashtag: #N’Koudoussigns. infectious.

Lucas Perez to West Ham

West Ham completed the signing of Arsenal’s Lucas Perez to a three-year deal in 2018 and made the news on social media in a unique way.

The Hammers released a video featuring Perez using the Fantasy Football app. He was selecting his team when his name surfaced alongside the other West Ham forwards.

The caption next to the video read: ‘Is this real life? Is this just fantasy?’
