The Bell Post Hill suburb can be renamed because it is deeply offensive to Aboriginal people

Welcome to Bell Post Hill, the Australian suburb that may need to change its name as it is very offensive to Aboriginal people

  • The Geelong suburb in Victoria is named after a warning bell on a pole
  • The bell was used in the 1830s to alert settlers when the Aboriginal was nearby
  • It is believed that settlers would chase or kill the indigenous people
  • Indigenous community leaders have called for votes to rename the suburb

Aborigines have called for a new name for the Australian suburb of Bell Post Hill, because its origins are linked to the death of their ancestors.

The Geelong suburb in Victoria is named after a warning clock placed on a post or forked tree on the hillside overlooking Corio Bay and the Moorabool River in the 1830s.

It was used to warn settlers when the Aborigines were nearby and as soon as the bell rang, it is believed that they either chased or massacred the native people.

Many of Geelong’s indigenous community leaders have called for a “suburban vote” to rename Bell Post Hill.

Wathaurong Aboriginal Co-Operative Chair Craig Edwards said the suburb name ‘still hurts’.

“We need to understand the meaning that it was a bell on top of a hill on a pole – and we’re calling a suburb that was part of a murder team that went down and massacred our indigenous people,” Mr. Edwards told the Geelong Advertiser.

‘I always believe in the quote’, ‘remember history, because it allows your presence to create a better future’ ”.

Alderman Anthony Aitken in the Northern Suburbs said he welcomed a name change and he is pleased to see that the community is having a conversation about the origin of their suburb.

“It reinforces my view that we really lack understanding of our indigenous heritage and history and I think we should develop a more permanent and ongoing way of telling those stories in Geelong,” he said.

The Bell Post Hill sports clubs, including cricket and soccer teams, are also open to discussing name changes if the suburb is renamed.
