The discovery of a rare diamond inside a diamond in India and bears the name “beating heart”

A unique ‘diamond within a diamond’ has been discovered, according to a company in Surat, India – and it’s one of the rarest stones in history when it comes to such stones.

VD Global called the 0.329-carat piece a ‘beating heart’ and said it consisted of a block diamond with a smaller, freely moving piece trapped within it, according to the Times of India.

The stone was originally found in the rough in October last year by a diamond manufacturer operating out of Surat and Mumbai, according to independent.

The Gem and Jewelery Export Promotion Council (GJEPC) set up by the Indian government said the ‘beating heart’ joins a small group of similar natural diamonds such as the Matryoshka diamonds from Siberia, which were registered for the first time in 2019.

The authenticity of the stone was confirmed by further analysis using light and electron microscopes.

VD Global dubbed the 0.329 carat cut

VD Global has called the 0.329-carat piece a “beating heart” and said it consists of a round cut diamond with a smaller, freely moving piece trapped inside.

I’ve never seen anything like a ‘beating heart’ in the last 30 years in the diamond sector, said Samantha Sibley, Technical Instructor at De Beers Group Ignite.

“Using the expertise of the De Beers group, we are able to shed light on the composition and structure of this natural specimen and share these insights with a broader community of diamond professionals,” added Sibley.

Rare diamonds are found with visible “etch features” on each of the smaller diamonds in the inner cavity.

Experts explained that the cavity may have formed due to the preferential etching of an intermediate layer of poor-quality fibrous diamond.

The 'Matryoshka' diamond was found in 2019, it is 800 million years old and said to be priceless.

In 2019, another one-of-a-kind gem “within a gem” was discovered in Siberia.

The 800-million-year-old gem was said to be priceless and the only such find in the world.

The so-called diamond “matryoshka” resembles traditional Russian nesting dolls, one inside the other.

Inside, tiny diamonds nested in its enclosed airspace have an estimated weight of 0.02 carats and dimensions of 1.9 x 2.1 x 0.6 mm. Smaller diamond rattles inside the larger gem.
