Ryan Sutter has admitted that the cryptic Instagram posts he made about his wife Trista Sutter in May, which sparked divorce rumors, did not go down well with him and his family.

The 49-year-old father of two told Chris Harrison on the latest episode of The most dramatic podcast of all time that Trista, 51, left home in May for an as-yet-undisclosed reason, which turned out to be a new reality TV opportunity for the inaugural Bachelorette star.

Because he couldn’t talk to his wife while she was competing on Fox’s Special Forces: The World’s Toughest Test, Ryan took to Instagram to share messages that Trista was later able to find.

“Trista wasn’t going to be able to access social media until she was done with this experience she was in,” Ryan shared.

He reiterated: “So I was going to post these things knowing that, the moment she had access to them, she would look at them and be able to say, ‘This is what happened while you were gone.’ This is what we missed. “you.”‘

“It just blew up in my face and backfired,” he said on Monday’s podcast episode.

“If something really bad was happening in my life, I wouldn’t tell anyone. Most of my personal life is still pretty personal,” he clarified.

The former television personality noted that she uses social media to remember the “emotional state” she was in while posting particular captions.

Weeks ago, Sutter worried fans when he began sharing cryptic posts about “missing” his wife of 20 years, who was “in a place in life where she’s searching a little.”

When Trista, a physical therapist, finally returned to social media in late May, she joked: ‘Geez, people. Can’t a girl have a nervous breakdown, a trial separation, a mid-life crisis, a death or a divorce in peace around here?

‘An opportunity for perspective and personal growth presented itself and with the unconditional support of my family and friends, I chose myself and improved, knowing that my job as a stay-at-home mom and the end of my children’s school year’ needs were in the best and most capable hands,” Ms. Sutter explained in a lengthy Instagram caption on May 25.

She added: ‘My stoic husband, who normally chooses privacy over posting, decided to share his love for me in messages I would find on my travels. We look at Instagram like a digital diary. Most of the time, the world doesn’t pay much attention to it.

‘This time, he couldn’t say anything right and almost every media outlet picked up his “cryptic/confusing/attention-grabbing/dramatic” images and captions. For me, they gave me exactly what my words of affirmation and love language needed to overcome some serious self-doubt and fears…and that’s all that matters.’
