The casting of 31-year-old Matt is a departure from previous Bachelors, and he is the first university academic to front a series.

A Channel 10 insider revealed in March that executives deliberately chose a non-famous candidate to 'refresh' the franchise.

"The novelty of watching a celebrity search for love has been worn off and producers figured that out pretty quickly after Nick Cummins" final, "the source said.

'Matt is a normal, decent guy who is genuinely looking to meet someone.

"Producers see this as a way of giving the public what they failed to give them last year – a happily ever after!"

According to NW magazine, Matt was an instant hit with the female contestants at the first cocktail party.

This season's diverse selection of women were reportedly smitten with the 'hot nerd' and charmed by his intelligence.

"He seemed incredibly charming," said an on-set source. "He had all the girls in fits of laughter and hanging off his every word."

Matt told Woman's Day earlier this year that he is looking for a woman who will complement his down-to-earth nature.
