England are seeking another miracle to save the Ashes as Australia require eight wickets to secure the fourth Test at Old Trafford and retain the Urn.

It will take a remarkable rearguard batting effort for England to come through the 98 overs scheduled for Sunday.

But their astonishing victory at Headingley in the last Test means hope springs eternal they can get to The Oval next week with the series still alive.

England were bowled out for 301 in their first innings on Saturday afternoon before taking a flurry of Australian wickets.

However, England’s nemesis Steve Smith made 82 to push Australia’s lead in the match to 383.

And then disaster struck for England as Rory Burns and Joe Root were dismissed in consecutive balls by Pat Cummins to leave Australia in firm command.

Joe Denly and Jason Roy steered England to the close but it will take another monumental batting effort from the remaining wickets to save the match.
