The start of the Arizona Diamondbacks’ game against the Los Angeles Dodgers was delayed due to a colony of bees swarming behind home plate, forcing seats in some sections to be evacuated.
The game was scheduled to begin at 7 pm local time in Phoenix, with a delay of more than 90 minutes to allow the bees to be successfully removed from the playing field.
The delay also caused the Diamondbacks to change their starting pitcher for Tuesday’s game. Jordan Montgomery was replaced by Brandon Hughes.
Several spring training games have been delayed due to bee swarms, especially in Arizona with extremely high temperatures.
Chase Field has a retractable roof, but it was open Tuesday night, prompting the bees to enter.

All seating sections near the bees were momentarily evacuated so they could be removed.
Players waited more than 90 minutes to start the game, including Shohei Ohtani.
Finally, a beekeeper was lifted to the pole 30 feet above the ground where the swarm was located. He sprayed them and vacuumed them out of sight.
Over the speakers at Chase Field as the bug spray was deployed, Bonnie Tyler’s ‘Holding Out for a Hero’ played in an appropriate motion.
When the colony was no longer on the playing field, the beekeeper was lowered to field level and cheered up the crowd. He received a standing ovation from those in attendance Tuesday night.
During the delay, the Diamondbacks’ official X account posted multiple facts about the bees.
‘Almost 90% of wild plants and 75% of the world’s main crops depend on animal pollination. One in three bites of our food depends on pollinators like bees. “Crops that depend on pollination are five times more valuable than those that do not,” reads one of the facts about bees.
The official account of the Mariners responded with its own facts in a Message of 4,776 words.
The game officially started at 8:36 pm local time.
