With a new update, HomePods are able to detect smoke and carbon monoxide alarms
Apple surprised many with the new HomePod earlier this year. The announcement also mentioned some features that should be delivered via updates. One of them is now available: the notification of a detected smoke and carbon monoxide alarm.
HomePod can use sound detection to detect alarms
Both old and new HomePods will be able to detect smoke and carbon monoxide alarms in your home via sound detection.
If it detects a value that is too high, HomePod will notify you by sending a notification to your iPhone, iPad or Apple Watch.
Then tap the notification on your iPad or iPhone to log in and review the situation. After all, it could also be a false alarm. As soon as you tap the notification, HomePod lets everyone in the home know that someone has signed in.
The HomePod then acts as a speakerphone, giving you the ability to talk to everyone in the home. If you’re using a HomeKit camera in the same room, you’ll see a camera feed at the same time.
The new feature can be activated and deactivated in the Home app. To do this, open the app and tap on the three-point menu. Then tap on “Home Settings” and then on “Protection & Security”.
Apple advises not to rely on HomePod alone and talks about the HomePod “possibly” notifying you of a dangerous situation.
What do you think of the new feature from Apple? Just a few months ago we reported that the new iOS feature “SOS via satellite” saved someone’s life. Maybe this feature could save someone from a dangerous situation at some point? Tell us what you think about it in the comments!
