The Amazing FOLDABLE House: Mini house can be transported and unfolded by truck almost anywhere

Did you think origami was only made with paper? Think again. An enterprising company does it with houses.

The Latvian start-up Brette Haus creates amazing folded mini-homes that are moved by truck to a (flat) location of your choice – then unfolded by two people in just three hours.

They come in three grades – Compact, Rustic and Urban – ranging in size from 18 to 108 square meters (193 to 1,162 square feet) and costing from 18,000 Euros (£ 16,000) to around 50,000 Euros (£ 44,500) for a copy with top-end spec.

They all have double glazing, a kitchen, a living room, a bathroom and a bedroom and have basic amenities: a toilet, sink, shower, plumbing and electrical systems. And while they can all be connected to a sewer and electricity grid, Brette Haus notes that a local expert might be needed to set this up.

On the plus side, most countries don’t require a building permit or a lot of paperwork to connect the structures, says Brette Haus.

Factory-fitted extras include an Ikea kitchen installation, a dishwasher or washing machine, solar energy kit, infrared heating, a water heater, a ‘smart home’ system and custom façade finishes.

Brette Haus suggests that the recyclable structures, which are made from cross-laminated wood (CLT), could be used as affordable housing, a cafe, a home office, a summerhouse, a guard house, a glamping lodge, or a rooftop hotel suite.

The Compact model can even be put together to make a small folding city.

Brette Haus says: ‘Our folding Compact houses can be easily adapted to the size of your business. Attach one unit to another and you get a much larger construction. This option makes it possible to create large residential or retail chains similar to townhouses, but with a very important advantage: they are movable and can be moved freely or stored compactly when not needed.

“A tropical or winter resort, an eco-village, a summer camp, a rural shopping area, a food market, or some other community.

‘Folding houses can not only arise as individual projects, but can also form new social structures.’

Brette Haus says it only takes a week to ship the product within mainland Europe. But the units can be delivered all over the world as they fit in shipping containers.

Each takes approximately eight weeks to produce. The company unfolded its first home in a national park on the Baltic coast in December 2019.
