This is the heartwarming moment a hearing-impaired baby hears his mother’s voice for the first time after being fitted with a hearing aid.

Three-month-old Albie Collins underwent a screening which revealed moderate hearing loss in both ears.

His parents, Amy and Matthew, both 29, were overwhelmed with joy by their son’s reaction to hearing them speak for the first time since his hearing aids were fitted.

The moving footage shows the first moment in Albie’s life when he was finally able to listen clearly as well as his first days at home adjusting to all the new noises.

The couple, from Liversedge, West Yorkshire, made the decision to fit their baby with hearing aids to help him speak and learn as he grows.

The touching clip shows Albie, who suffers from the same problem as his father Matthew, smiling as he looks into Amy’s eyes.

She can be heard saying, “Hello sweetie!” Hello beautiful boy. Are you a beautiful baby? Do you hear mom? Say mom!

The mother of two shared the special moment of her son reacting to her voice on TikTok last month.

She said: “He initially failed his newborn hearing screening test in hospital so was referred to an audiologist for further investigation.”

“Doctors advised him to wear hearing aids from a young age so that his speech and language would not be affected as he grew.

“His father has the same hearing loss that was detected when he was in primary school, so the link is likely due to genetics.

Hearing loss in babies

According to the NHS, it can be more difficult to detect hearing loss in babies. It can also affect a child’s speech development and academic progress.

One to two in 1,000 babies are born with permanent hearing loss in one or both ears.

Babies may be offered a newborn hearing test before discharge if they were born in hospital.

Otherwise, it will be carried out by a health professional, a caregiver or a health visitor in the first weeks.

The test should be done within the first 4 to 5 weeks, but it can be done up to three months of age.

There is a government checklist on what to look for as your baby grows to check if he can hear.
