A pensioner was left with horrific injuries after being attacked in his own backyard.
Robert Thompson, 74, was the victim of an unprovoked attack outside his home in Gateshead, which required surgery for a broken hip, a broken cheekbone and a broken nose.
Thompson posted photos of the injuries sustained in the attack in an effort to help police track down the criminal.

Police believe the perpetrator jumped over the garden gate before attacking Thompson, before fleeing on foot along Stella Road, Blaydon, where he was seen in a black car on Wednesday, April 22.
Detective Constable Ben Malinski said, “This was an insensitive and unprovoked attack that required a vulnerable retiree to undergo surgery.
Thompson needed surgery for a broken hip, broken cheekbone and a broken nose after the unprovoked attack
Fortunately, Mr. Thompson has recovered quickly and is recovering well, but we are determined to find the one responsible for this vicious attack.
“We have conducted a number of investigations in connection with this incident and are now asking the public for information.
“If you have seen or think you have any information about who is responsible, please come forward as soon as possible.”
The attacker is described as a white man in his early twenties and has a dirty beard.
He was wearing a gray hooded top at the time of the attack.
The police are asking anyone with more information to come forward or call the police at 101.
