A seven-year-old boy died Wednesday after a boat in which he sat with ‘more than nine people’ capsized in the Chicago River.

Victor Lobato, from Little Village, was on the boat when it capsized around 6:40 am near the 1500 block of South Lumber Street in Chinatown.

Police say the boat capsized and descended three blocks to 18th Street by the time first responders were able to rescue the occupants, ABC 7 Chicago reports.

“If you look down the river, the accessibility of where we actually found the victim versus where we picked up the rest. We’re talking three blocks down the river, ”said Deputy District Chief Carmelita Wiley-Earls, CFD.

According to the fire brigade, there were at least nine people on the ‘small vessel’ and it is unclear whether the passengers wore life jackets.

“There were more than nine people in the boat,” said Chief Patrick Maloney, CFD. “It was a small vessel, quite well packed in terms of water safety.”

On the spot, three passengers refused medical treatment.

Three adults and three children have been taken to a local hospital and are reported to be in fair to critical condition.

The incident is believed to be an accident.

“The helicopter divers who went into the water were able to retrieve the only child under the capsized boat,” said Maloney.

Witness calls to the emergency center brought emergency workers to the scene so quickly.

“Without public input and without the public initially sounding the alarm, we would have a different outcome,” said Wiley-Earls.

In the area where the boat capsized, the river is about 20 to 30 feet deep.

Firemen said this was the fourth or fifth water rescue incident this week, highlighting the importance of not going overboard and wearing a life jacket.

The rescue was a joint effort by police, fire and the US Coast Guard.
