Breville’s Barista Express has been our go-to beginner espresso machine recommendation for years. It’s reliable (the unit I bought in 2018 still works perfectly today), easy to master, and feature-rich. Place freshly roasted coffee beans into the hopper and adjust the grind setting. Pull out the magnetic tamper and gently press it onto the portafilter. Attach the portafilter and press a button—you’ve now made an espresso (as long as the pressure gauge indicated the pressure was in the “espresso range.” Use the steam wand to heat up some milk if you want a latte. We’ve seen it drop to this sale price a few times, but it’s rarely dipped lower in recent years.

Do you tend to drink a lot of lattes? You might prefer an automatic machine – press a button and it will mix the milk into your coffee for a delicious cup without any effort on your part. The Cafe Barista is our top budget recommendation in our guide to the best latte and cappuccino machines, and this price makes it a steal. It’s plastic and lightweight (hence the price), so you’ll want to hold it in one hand while twisting the portafilter into place. It can make a nice espresso, and then you can press a button to make a latte or cappuccino, provided you’ve filled the built-in milk container. Just be sure to refrigerate the container when you’re done and clean it out frequently.

KitchenAid’s new semi-automatic espresso machine (8/10, WIRED recommends) has a built-in grinder that’s wonderfully quiet in operation, so much so that it’s certified Quiet brandThe next best trick? It’s pretty compact! If counter space is at a premium in your kitchen, this espresso machine has a small footprint and has wheels on its base so you can move it around and out of the way. Great! There’s also a generous amount of space between the portafilter and the base, so you won’t have any trouble fitting taller cups. The only problem? It may take a few tries to get the grind dosage right, but once you get it right, you’ll be sipping pretty happily.

Let’s state the obvious: No one needs a $185 scale. Even on sale, that’s a lot of money for a device that weighs grain, water, and just about anything else. Still, in our experience, this scale is an absolute joy to use, and the brew assist mode is very helpful. The Tally Pro has a solid, weighty feel to it. You twist the knob to cycle through the different weight units on its small OLED display, and press a smaller button next to it to cycle through the modes.

Brew Assist mode is fantastic for pour over coffee fans. Place the coffee grounds container on the scale, tare, add the grounds to the container, use the knob to set the desired water to coffee ratio and the scale will do the math to tell you how much water you will need to achieve that strength. You can watch this tutorial to see How Brew Assist Mode Works.

The original AeroPress was the closest thing to a perfect coffee-making device: a palm-sized syringe you can take anywhere that makes delicious coffee with ease and is also easy to clean. The AeroPress XL is more of the same — literally. It’s the same device, just twice the size of everything — plunger, chamber, lid, filter, and stirrer — and it also comes with a carafe. Admittedly, we’re not exactly sure who the AeroPress XL is for. There are probably easier ways to brew twice as much coffee, and pouring a pint of boiling water into a chamber balanced over a carafe sounds like it could end badly. However, if you’ve been waiting for an upgrade from your original AeroPress forever and you drink twice as much coffee as you did before, the 43 percent discount seems like a steal.

If you love making pour over coffee, you should definitely invest in a gooseneck kettle. Fellow’s Stagg EKG is the gold standard in the industry. This electric kettle pours coffee beautifully and the handle allows for precise control. The beautiful knob on the base allows you to control temperatures and it will stay at that temperature until you turn it off. This is my default kettle for everything – when I’m not using it to make pour over coffee, I take the lid off and pour the water from the top to go faster.
