59-year-old aid worker imprisoned for sexually assaulting his disabled neighbor, 31, after an evening of Bible studies
A former elderly caregiver has been jailed for sexually assaulting his neighbor with an intellectual disability after an evening of Bible studies.
The 59-year-old man, who cannot be named for legal reasons, pleaded guilty to sexually assaulting the 31-year-old man in January 2018.
“The complainant was in a vulnerable position,” Judge Vicki Loury told the Brisbane court on Thursday.

“He had been sexually assaulted before, you knew that, and he had a significant mental disability that you were well aware of.”
“He hadn’t given you any reason to think he was completely sexually interested in you and you knew he was a straight man.
“Nevertheless you violated him in a despicable manner.”
The court heard that the men were friends and had read a religious book together when the man started rubbing his victim’s back.
“He said to stop,” said Judge Loury.
But the older man did not stop. Instead, he undressed the younger man and began sexually assaulting him.
“He started banging on the couch telling you to stop … He was clearly upset,” said Judge Loury.
“He trusted you, and you have betrayed that trust in a terrible way.”
After the attack, the man admitted his actions to the police, saying that he had been drinking heavily and that he believed the sex was by mutual consent.
He was later forced to move out of the apartment complex where his victim also lived and lost his job at an aged care home.
Judge Loury said that sexual assault can have unique and long-lasting effects on victims.
She sentenced the man to 18 months’ imprisonment after four months.
