A Uber driver in Louisiana was arrested for shooting at passengers after leaving his vehicle halfway through the ride because he was heading in the wrong direction.

Ahmad Ahmad, 53, picked up two people from a bar in downtown New Orleans on Sunday at 12.04 and was asked to take them to the Kenner area, about 24 km away.

But when the driver started to drive across the Mississippi River Bridge (Crescent City Connection) to the West Bank and to Jefferson Parish, the couple complained to the driver that he was heading in the wrong direction.

According to a police report, Ahmad and the passengers got into a fight and the driver stopped the car on the US 90 in Algiers.

A call has been made to the police at this point, although it is not clear by whom.

During the verbal exchange, one of the passengers ordered another Uber and when that driver arrived, they changed cars.

But Ahmad stopped them from going somewhere by opening the passenger door and removing the key from the contact, reports the incident report from the New Orleans Police Department.

Ahmad finally went back to his vehicle, grabbed a gun and shot at the passengers.

As the victims fled the scene, Ahmad left in his car. Police say he later returned to the location and was arrested.

He was booked in the Orleans Parish prison after heavy assault with a firearm, theft and illegal use of arms charges, but has since been released.

It is unclear whether he has a lawyer on his behalf.

The victims are not publicly identified, nor are their gender and age.

Authorities did not disclose whether there was an injury.
