Young Australians have been urged to explore careers in the customs industry, where some entry-level jobs offer starting salaries of more than $100,000.
Despite attractive salaries, insiders warn of a looming shortage of customs brokers as the current workforce leaves the profession.
Customs brokers play a crucial role in facilitating trade by ensuring that import and export goods comply with all customs regulations and are essential for the smooth flow of goods in and out of the country.
Supply chain expert and Transitainer WA director Kelly Crossley has warned the industry is on the brink of a crisis due to a shortage of new employees.
“Customs brokers are the country’s gateway for the smooth flow of goods across borders, navigating complex customs regulations, ensuring compliance and helping businesses avoid costly delays and penalties,” he said. WA today.
“Without customs agents, nothing enters or leaves Australia,” he said.
According to Crossley, more than half of the 1,609 licensed customs brokers in Australia are over 50 years old.
He urged younger Australians to consider taking on a role in the profession.

According to job site SEEK, customs brokers in Australia typically earn between $95,000 and $115,000. However, some positions may offer salaries in excess of $170,000.
Aspiring agents must complete a Customs Broker Diploma, pass an exam administered by the Australian Border Force and obtain a customs broker license to practice.
