A little girl from Texas died in hospital after she was accidentally hit by an Uber driver while walking in front of the car after a trip.
The incident happened around 1 p.m. Sunday at an apartment complex on Waverly Drive in Houston as two children and two adults were being dropped off by an Uber.
An adult and a six-year-old child exited the silver Volkswagen Atlas from the driver’s side while the other adult exited from the passenger side.
As they walked in front of the car, the little girl was seen behind it before walking in front of the vehicle and was hit by the driver, Muhammad Khan.
As Khan tried to free her, passengers who witnessed the horrific incident ran inside and came out with a larger group who then attacked the driver.
He was hospitalized with serious injuries, but his life is not in danger. No charges or arrests have been filed, but the incident remains under investigation, including the assault.
A 1-year-old girl was hit by Uber driver Muhammad Khan around 1 p.m. Sunday at an apartment complex on Waverly Drive in Houston, Texas.
A neighbor who witnessed the accident said KHOU 11 that he “tried to save her” by rushing and putting the little girl in his car to take her to the hospital.
Surveillance video of the horrific tragedy was captured on the Ring camera of another neighbor, Simya Washington.
The video shows a silver Volkswagen Atlas pull into a parking lot at the complex and stop to drop off passengers.
An adult and a child then exit the vehicle from the driver’s side while the other adult exits from the passenger side. The toddler is then seen trailing behind as she walks towards the front of the car.
Khan, who did not see the girl, then put the SUV in drive, drove forward and hit the 1-year-old.
‘Mr. Khan stopped the vehicle, but the juvenile was trapped under the left rear tire. Mr. Khan attempted to move the vehicle, but was unsuccessful as all parties assaulted him and pulled him from the vehicle,” a statement from the Harris County Sheriff’s Office said.
The little girl is seen moments before the driver hits her with the car as the other passengers drive away.
After realizing he had knocked her down, Khan tried to free her as a group of family members burst in and punched him repeatedly. He was hospitalized with serious but non-life-threatening injuries.
The video then shows the moments after the girl was pinned under the car, as some witnesses run to help and others return with a large group of people who immediately begin beating Khan.
Several people pulled him out of his car and hit him several times.
Police said family members were present at the time of the incident, but they had to inform the child’s parents of what happened to him.
“I saw a baby on the ground bleeding with a group of people screaming. The first thing I said was give me the keys because I don’t want to wait in an ambulance,” a neighbor said.
The family managed to get the girl into the car and met an ambulance nearby. She was treated at a gas station.
She was then rushed to hospital where she was pronounced dead an hour after the incident.
“It’s just sad to watch because I see her out there almost every other day playing with her little toys and stuff, and just knowing that this happened to this little baby,” Washington shook his head saying NBC News.
No charges or arrests have been filed, but the incident remains under investigation, including the assault.
“No one wanted this to happen, no one wants to hurt a child,” the other neighbor said.
In a statement, Uber told FOX Business: “The details of what has been reported are heartbreaking and our hearts go out to the victim’s family.”
The ride-hailing company said it removed Khan’s access to the platform while the incident was investigated.
The little girl was just two months shy of her second birthday.
Lt. K Benoit said: “It’s just an unfortunate tragedy at this point. »
“As parents, loved ones and guardians of children, we need to be much more vigilant, hold their hand, guide them to a safe place, and then watch the driver drive away,” he said.
The sheriff’s office said Khan showed no signs of impairment and was cooperating with the investigation.
