There’s been a lot to celebrate recently, after Strictly won big at the 2024 BAFTA Television Awards last weekend.

The BBC show was awarded Best Entertainment Programme, beating competition from Big Show, Michael McIntyre’s Later… with Jools Holland and Hannah Waddingham: Home For Christmas.

The award was presented by Dominic West, and Tess joined her co-presenter Claudia Winkleman to lead the Strictly team on stage to accept the honour.

Tess began her acceptance speech by joking: “Thank you so much BAFTA, for making it worth it to put on Spanx on the hottest day of the year – it was a struggle.”

Expressing her gratitude for the award, she explained that it was especially meaningful as it coincides with Strictly’s 20th anniversary, after the dance competition first hit television screens in May 2004.

Tess said: ‘Strictly turns 20 this year. We have been on television for 20 years. Then this is the best birthday gift.

“And to the viewers at home, thank you so much for watching because we wouldn’t be here without you, and it really means a lot.”

She continued: ‘And this award goes to the entire Strictly team, who are the best on television. They work very hard and are led by our incredible executive producer Sarah James, who is incredible.

‘We are very lucky to have you. Not only did she produce our series last year, but she also gave birth during it. You are extraordinary!’

She concluded: “It’s been the most wonderful series and we want to thank all the celebrities for taking part and being so brave.” We may call some of you in the room later for the next series.

Claudia, 52, also jumped in to shout at the judging panel and professional dancers and couldn’t resist making a joke about Strictly’s musical director Dave Arch, 61.

She gushed: “We have to mention our extraordinary judges, the backbone of our show, the amazing professional dancers, so thank you.”

‘And of course, we’re in a relationship with Dave Archer, so thanks Dave!’

Speaking to the media after their win, the duo could not hide their joy and surprise upon receiving the award.

Claudia admitted: ‘We’re quite shocked. I feel wobbly and weird!’

While Tess agreed, adding: ‘We feel a bit unnecessary because we’re quite overwhelmed. We don’t take it for granted. Have we won three times?

Claudia continued: ‘I don’t count, but we are also a very united team. And looking at their faces. When they called our name I feel like it took us about 49 minutes to get to the stage. “We’re not live, so they’ll be able to edit it.”

Mentioning their anniversary, he continued: ‘It’s a big year for us and it’s a privilege to do the show.

‘It’s one of those shows that I think whole families watch, so we get lovely letters from grandparents with their grandchildren.

“So it’s an honor, but we never take it for granted that people will come, so every year we keep our fingers crossed.”
