Fourteen people were injured after a Korean plane bound for Mongolia suddenly plunged into turbulence, sending people crashing through the roof.

The Korean Air flight had departed Incheon and was heading to Mongolia’s capital Ulaanbaatar on Sunday, August 4, when it encountered severe turbulence.

Ten passengers and four flight attendants on board flight KE197 were reported injured after complaining of back and neck pain.

The plane reportedly shook for about 15 seconds while flying at an altitude of 10,393 metres (34,100 feet) near Tianjin Airport in China.

One person who was reportedly on board the flight said: “The plane went down so hard that people were screaming and food was spilling over, it was chaos.”

Another person on the plane said passengers who were not wearing seat belts were thrown into the air and one person crashed through the ceiling and fell into the aisle.

A medical team was reportedly at the Mongolian airport to treat the injured.

It is said that 281 passengers were on board the flight.

This comes after one person was killed and others injured on a flight from London to Singapore in May after it tumbled for several minutes amid extreme turbulence before making an emergency landing in Thailand.

The Boeing 777 aircraft experienced severe turbulence while flying near Myanmar airspace and plummeted from an altitude of around 37,000 feet to 31,000 feet in just five minutes.

Terrified passengers described how they had little warning to fasten their seatbelts before the plane suddenly went down.

Those who were not wearing seat belts said they were “thrown against the roof.”

Last month, an episode of extreme turbulence on a flight from Madrid to Montevideo left 30 people injured with head, face and spinal cord injuries.
