Terrifying moment great white shark lunges at British tourist on board pleasure boat in South Africa

Date:

The terrifying moment a great white shark pounced on a British tourist aboard a pleasure boat in South Africa, just meters away from him, has been captured on video.

Incredible footage shows a ten-foot great white leaping out of the ocean to grab a huge chunk of fish being used as bait before clenching its razor-sharp teeth around it and shaking it frantically until it frees.

It was one of four great white sharks that swooped on the boat next to Klein Brak beach near Mossel Bay, South Africa.

Video and footage of the apex predators was captured using a GoPro Hero 10 by a British videographer and a member of the dive team from a shark cage and from the group’s boat.

The group had encountered the great white sharks circling the ship and looming menacingly around those in the cage, in scenes reminiscent of Jaws.

Mark Graham, 31, from Preston, England, was leading a trip to dive with great white sharks 30 minutes from the port of Mossel Bay, which lasted around four hours.

He was able to capture the intense images and videos of the sharks opening their jaws and approaching up to six feet.

Mark said he was thrilled to capture the content because, although he often takes groups to see the sharks, the ones he usually encounters aren’t quite as spirited.

He said: “No one was scared, even the guests who didn’t want to go into the water initially changed their minds and entered the cage to find the sharks underwater.”

“Great white sharks are most often extremely slow and curious, staying just below the surface to investigate the boat and cage.

“So when we have active days where the great whites show how effective they are as predators coming out of the water and swooping in for bait, it’s amazing to see.”

Mark is also keen to dispel stereotypes of these magnificent creatures.

He said: “I don’t think the reputation is justified, with more and more people using the ocean every year with just five fatal shark attacks in 2022, while humans are killing over 11,000 sharks per hour. .”

“Sharks are just sharks, they are animals, they are not monsters, learn to appreciate them for what they are, not what you think they are and what they are important for, not how you feel about them.

“If you are lucky enough to see them in the wild, go see them, I guarantee your perception will change.”
