A woman's foot is seen in the air as people were thrown around the cabin of a plane by strong turbulence.

Terrifying video shows the moment extreme turbulence hit a passenger plane, throwing passengers against the ceiling on a Miami-bound flight that was then forced to turn around and return to Europe.

The Scandinavian Airlines flight from Stockholm, which was supposed to take more than nine hours, was almost at its destination when it was forced to turn around and return due to the alarming situation on Thursday.

After experiencing turbulence over Greenland, the packed plane returned to a base in Copenhagen for checks over concerns about technical problems.

A passenger on the flight, who was traveling with his wife, posted footage showing passengers screaming as the plane was rocked by turbulence.

Then a woman sitting in their row is thrown up. ‘Look at his feet touching the (ceiling)!’ he wrote. ‘I thought we were going to (die).’

According to Scandinavian Airlines, there were 254 passengers and a baby on board the plane.

A passenger who was on board said he saw at least one person suffer injuries, but an airline spokesman said no serious injuries were reported.

They told MailOnline that the plane had to turn around because it did not have the necessary equipment in Miami to carry out the checks.

Passengers will be offered hotel rooms and will fly to Miami on Friday, according to the airline.

Passengers posted photos of the cabin during the turbulence on social media, with items such as plastic cups, paper bags and a man’s backpack scattered on the floor.

In September, a Scandinavian Airlines flight was forced to divert after a rodent was discovered in a passenger’s meal.

The plane, which was flying from Oslo to Malaga, Spain, was forced to land in Copenhagen as a safety precaution after the mouse was found in a meal during the flight.

Rodents on board airplanes can pose a safety risk as they can chew on critical cables. Airlines usually have procedures to prevent such an incident from occurring.
