“I saw them attack a lady trying to stop theft, I chased them and defended myself,” he told Daily Mail Australia.

A villain pulled a large kitchen knife before retiring to his car.

“I felt sick because my girlfriend was in the area,” he said.

Another witness posted a screenshot on social media of a series of text messages they sent when the chaos unfolded.

“Five-six boys attacked this guy at the front of the store. I think they had bats and a knife, “was the message.

Woolworths confirmed that no staff members were injured.
