Tennis champion Jelena Dokic suffered an eye injury while watching the Grand Prix course after gravel was swept up by Fernando Alonso’s car.

Dokic had been in the Mercedes-AMG Lounge watching a Formula 1 practice session at Melbourne’s Albert Park on Friday when Alonso took a turn wide and went off the track.

Some of the gravel and debris kicked up by his car went straight into the tennis legend’s right eye, leaving her needing assistance from paramedics working at the event.

“When you go to the Formula 1 weekend at the Australian Grand Prix and a car going off the track happens right in front of you, literally, and all the debris flies right into your eye,” Dokic wrote on Instagram.

‘Fernando Alonso ran off the track and the rock debris that you see flying from the rear wheels went straight into my right eye.

‘We had to be treated for it, but all good. Just a bloodshot and scratched eye. I want to survive.’

Dokic shared a video of herself having her eye flushed out with drops while laughing that her make-up was potentially ruined.

‘I feel good. Ready to watch some more F1,” she continued.

‘Oh, and I can confirm that the makeup somehow stayed on and didn’t go away. Amazing.’

It comes after Daniel Ricciardo was eliminated from the first qualifying session at the Grand Prix for the first time in history after exceeding track limits.

The Aussie had delivered what appeared to be one final lap to advance to Q2 before the stewards deleted that time because they believed Ricciardo exceeded the track limits at Turn 5.

The deleted lap time would have placed Ricciardo in the top 10, which would have been enough for him to progress to Q2.
