Several people were in the area after the Caribbean carnival, which ended a few hours earlier, they added.

Superintendent of Detective Debbie Dooley said: "We currently have several people in the hospital who are being treated for different injuries, but fortunately most do not seem to be life threatening at this time."

"The officers are trying to establish exactly where this incident occurred and who is responsible for such a dangerous attack.

"The Caribbean Carnival had taken place earlier that day, but it had ended several hours before this incident happened, so there were still a lot of people in the area."
