Thousands of Australians with old phones will be unable to make calls or send texts as major telecommunications companies shut down their 3G networks.

In a bid to increase the speed, capacity and reliability of their 4G and 5G system, TPG Telecom/Vodafone have disabled 3G.

Telstra and Optus will do the same on Monday.

Federal Communications Minister Michelle Rowland has urged all Australians to check and, if necessary, update their technology.

Telecommunications companies have been preparing for shutdowns since 2019, but the official shutdown has been delayed twice due to concerns about a particular type of phone – often bought abroad or second-hand – that cannot connect three times. zero on newer networks.

These phones use 4G for regular calls and texts, but 3G for the emergency line, so many fear that they will not experience problems until they try to call the emergency line after the network shuts down.

“If you or someone you know has one of these 3G devices, act now and contact your service provider,” Ms Rowland said.

“My department will continue to work with telecommunications companies during the transition process to ensure it occurs safely and effectively managed.”

To address the 60,000 affected phones in circulation, a new federal law will also go into effect on Monday that will force telecommunications companies to disconnect voice and data services on these devices.

Telstra and Optus customers should ensure their device is not affected by the shutdown.
