The career of the actress is about to go up a notch.
She stars in the upcoming movie A Thousand and One, due out Friday, and is already getting early talks of being an Oscar nominee for her performance.
The film is about Iman, a young woman just out of prison who seeks to re-establish a relationship with her son, Terry, and takes him out of foster homes without permission from the authorities.
The summary of what the story stands for was enough for me. And of course, you know, Inez is a Harlem girl and I’m a Harlem girl,” Tiana said CNN.
“What that role meant to me, to the women in my life, and to women all over the world, it was something I wanted to do.”
The film won the Grand Jury Prize at this year’s Sundance Film Festival.
On the early Oscars buzz, Tiana said, “Going from just sitting at home watching the Oscars to participating in Oscars-type talks is, of course, an honor.” I would be grateful even with just a nomination. This is great.’
When the mother-of-two filmed the movie, she was just six months away from giving birth to her daughter, Roo Rose, who is now two years old.

“Keeping Inez and all those bumps in place and then coming home and flipping the switch and being a great mom was definitely a challenge,” she said.
“I was dealing with postpartum and also dealing with the deaths of a lot of my friends and some of my family while filming in Harlem,” she revealed.
Having to go to funerals during your lunch break was a lot, you know? But I was able to put all of these feelings and all of my sadness onto Inez because she was dealing with so many things and so many losses in her life.
Tiana also shares seven-year-old daughter, Iman Joni Jr., with her husband, basketball player Iman Shumpert.
