The charges are still pending, but Genesee County Prosecutor David Leyton said that if the prosecutor’s office “applied the law to the facts as we currently know them,” the suspect could be charged with open murder, carjacking, armed robbery, use of a firearm in the commission of a felony, carrying a concealed weapon and a motor vehicle violation due to the accident.

Rep. Kildee, 65, has been in Congress since 2013. His uncle Dale Kildee was also in Congress and the younger Kildee was at one point one of the youngest elected officials in the country when, at age 18, he began serving on the Flint Board of Education in 1977.

In March 2023, he announced that he had been diagnosed with squamous cell carcinoma, saying a “very small tumor” had been discovered in one of his tonsils, but he underwent surgery and said he has since been “cancer free”.

But he said health problems had prompted him to “reevaluate” his future.

“After spending time with my wife, children and grandchildren and thinking about our future, the time has come for me to retire from public service,” Kildee said. “Running for office, ultimately, is first and foremost a personal decision. And it was not an easy decision to make. But I know it’s the right solution for me and my family.
