A 16-year-old girl died Wednesday after she was stabbed twice in the chest by another teenager during a fight apparently against a child at a Detroit suburban high school, police said.
Warren Police Commissioner William Dwyer said the deadly confrontation between the two "A law students" took place in a Fitzgerald High School classroom on Wednesday morning around 8:30 a.m.
Dwyer says the suspect was upset and disturbed when the student separated from her and started dating the victim, causing her to stab her love rival.
A school resource officer immediately began procedures to save lives, but the victim was pronounced dead in a hospital about an hour later. Dwyer said the 17-year-old suspect used a meat knife.
& # 39; This is really a tragedy. This seems to be an altercation between two students and we are investigating to determine why this happened, "said Dwyer.

Dwyer said the girls knew each other and they had no problem. He suggested that the dispute was about a student who is cooperating with the investigation.
The suspect was arrested at the scene, and Dwyer said the authorities will seek a murder charge.
The victim was on the school's robotics team, the student council, he ran cross-country and played in the marching band, Dwyer said.
There was a strong police presence at the school that was temporarily placed in lockdown

The school was initially placed at the closing, but the students were released later.
The district said in a statement that the high school will be closed on Thursday, but that students and their parents can come during normal school hours to receive support and assistance from counselors, psychologists and social workers.
"Our hearts and prayers go to the student's family and we offer our deepest sympathy," Fournier said in the statement.
School authorities say they are working with the police and conducting an internal review that includes security procedures.
