Hobbs had graduated from Murrah High School on Tuesday morning. Video of the ceremony, streamed live on Facebook, shows her wearing silver high heels and a blue cap and dress.
The death of Hobbs, the daughter of a district faculty member, has cast a shadow over the end of the school year ceremonies scheduled for this week.
The city celebrated graduations at its seven high schools after a year marked by challenges from the coronavirus pandemic. Multiple starts were planned so the neighborhood could limit crowds and monitor COVID-19 safety precautions.
At Wednesday’s graduation ceremony after Hobbs’ death, Jackson Public Schools Superintendent Errick Greene said, “It really caught on a little differently.”
“It was a little more topical and meaningful because I challenged them to look left and right to realize they might not see their classmates again.”
Police are now questioning witnesses who were present at the time of the shooting.
The gunman fled before officers arrived. It is unclear whether Hobbs was aware of her killer or what the motive for the shooting was.
Hobbs’ uncle, William Edwards, said her death was “hard to handle.”
He told the local station WAPT: ‘I’ve never felt this way and I’m trying to understand it.’
Hobbs’ family says the teen’s boyfriend was killed in an April shooting on Robinson Street’s Rose Street.
It is not clear whether the two shootings are related.
Mississippi’s capital saw a record homicide rate in 2020, with nearly 130 homicides in the city of about 161,000. Most were gun-related, police said.
In 2021, the city is on track to surpass that milestone. By the end of April, 50 people had died in Jackson.
