A teenager has been charged after images have surfaced in which he yanked a possum from a tree in the middle of the night and brutally attacked him.
The 19-year-old from Cannonvale in the Whitsundays was filmed by friends who turned the possum upside down while his tail repeatedly punched him in his face and body.
Another person who was not included in the recording also took a turn on the marsupial rat, which at some point seemed to be put back by the attackers.
He then threw the possum from the balcony without mercy.
The footage was uploaded to Snapchat and shortly afterwards seen by the police, who confirmed that the teenager had been accused of serious animal abuse.
The police said they would continue to investigate the case.
The Snapchat imagery was completed with caption & # 39; mission & # 39; when it was finally shared on the offender's account.
Michael Beatty, a spokesperson for Queensland RSPCA, told 7News the footage was worrying.
& # 39; It's terrible, & # 39; he said.
& # 39; It is premeditated and shows a total lack of empathy. & # 39;
He also said that he was concerned that the teenagers seemed so happy to harm an animal.
The primary offender is due to the court on July 16.
