A little boy is fighting for his life in hospital after he almost drowns in a swimming pool at his home.

The boy was in the pool at a property in Nelly Bay on Magnetic Island, located off the coast of Queensland, when he got into trouble about 6.30pm on Tuesday.

Paramedics responded to the scene after receiving reports that the child was having difficulty breathing.

The boy was taken to Townsville University Hospital in a critical condition.

A Queensland Health spokesperson told Daily Mail Australia the child is still in a critical condition.
